Marital therapy begins with a thorough assessment of the individuals and the couple’s relationship. Individual personality characteristics and marital personality characteristics are consistent during the courtship phase but then change dramatically over the course of the marriage. Individual and marital social histories are obtained via clinical interviews and clinical observations as well as data from standardized individual and marital testing which compares the clients’ responses to others with similar backgrounds.
The testing results are shared with the couple and, based upon the information reviewed, intervention strategies are jointly developed to strengthen and to enhance the marriage.
